Plot 14

Notes from a small allotment on the edge of Harrogate

Garlic in, leeks still standing

Planted two rows of garlic this morning before the rain came back. Cloves from last year's crop, the biggest ones only. The leeks have shrugged off the first cold nights and should see us through to February.

Clearing the bean trench

Runner beans finally finished. Cut the stems at soil level and left the roots in for the nitrogen. Canes are stacked in the shed, and the trench is getting a thick layer of compost for next spring.

A very good year for squash

Eleven butternuts and four crown princes, now curing on the windowsill. The crown princes went grey-blue exactly as promised on the packet. Next year they get the sunnier bed by the water butt.

Slugs, again

Lost most of the late lettuce in two damp nights. Wool pellets helped a little, the beer traps helped more. Trying a ring of grit around the winter salad bed and hoping for the best.
